Anxiety attacks can be invasive and frightening but they can be stopped simply and quickly.

Anxiety attacks are a symptom of anxiety disorders, a group of conditions which are caused by an increase in the baseline or 'normal' resting anxiety levels. This group of conditions includes Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Anxiety attacks are also often called panic attacks and characterised by a group of symptoms which although completely harmless, can be quite disturbing to the anxiety attacks sufferer.

Panic and anxiety disorders cause anxiety attacks because the body has become re-set at a higher than normal level of anxiousness. This can happen because of stress such as work pressure, bereavement, trauma or divorce for example. It doesn't matter what the catalyst was, the cause of anxiety attacks is the same in every single sufferer.

The body's baseline level of anxiety becomes raised above the normal level. This happens through over stimulating the system which controls the body's anxious response. The neurological structure responsible for this response is called the Amygdala. This small almond-shaped structure, situated in the brain, controls the response by acting as a 'switch' which is activated when needed, releasing hormones into the blood stream and preparing the body to either fight or flee from a perceived threat.

The fight or flight response can, if the adrenalin produced is not used up by either fleeing or fighting a real threat, cause an anxiety attack to develop. Sometimes a single anxiety attack is all the mind needs to experience in order to develop the subconscious anxious habit which causes an anxiety disorder.

In anxiety disorder though, this anxiety 'switch' becomes stuck in the ON position. This can cause inappropriate anxiety and sometimes extreme, often frightening, anxiety attacks and other anxiety symptoms. Although anxiety attacks can present many physical and psychological symptoms, they are completely harmless.

Anxiety attacks are not the manifestation of TRUE fear, they are the sensations associated with a false fear... where no actual, real threat exists, true fear cannot either.

Anxiety Attack Symptoms

Anxiety attacks are characterised mainly by symptoms such as shortness of breath, racing heart, sweating, shaking, dizziness, faintness, pins and needles in the limbs and many more possible symptoms. The sufferer may also be feeling anxious much of the time but experiencing only occasional anxiety attacks.

Whilst none of these anxiety attack symptoms are harmful in any way, they feel dreadful and can often be very frightening indeed. The symptoms of an anxiety attack are actually the manifestation of physical reactions which are designed to assist us when we feel threatened. The body diverts water from the stomach to the muscles for energy, digestion slows, the heart rate increases to feed the muscles and transport oxygen to where it is needed and many other changes happen which cause us to experience anxiety attack symptoms. Anxiety also causes us to experience fear on a psychological level too and this can manifest itself very quickly as fear, catastrophic 'what if' thoughts and feelings of impending doom, inappropriate thoughts, obsessions and anger for example.

Whilst anxiety attack symptoms can manifest themselves as the most extreme anxiety symptoms possible, they are completely harmless. Anxiety attacks happen as a result of the release of adrenalin, a hormone which prepares us to fight danger... it follows, therefore that its release would never place us in any danger.

Once this peak of anxiety attack symptoms is reached, only time will bring the anxiety level down to a more acceptable and tolerable level, however, there are things which can be done as 'first aid' during an anxiety attack in order to minimise its impact on you and also something targeted that you can do right now to overcome an eliminate your anxiety quickly, completely and permanently.

Most treatments for anxiety attacks and anxiety disorders centre on either the catalyst or the symptoms... very few concentrate on the root cause. Drug treatments attempt to remove the symptoms of the anxiety attacks but leave the core anxiety in place to raise its ugly head once the medication is withdrawn and this seems t be the experience of the majority of anxiety attacks sufferers - just as they think they have their anxiety under control with medication, they attempt withdrawal and the anxiety attacks re-emerge.
