Don't Panic!

I know it's easy to say and very difficult to do but it is possible to stop panic before it even begins. Let me explain.

To say, "don't panic" may seem ridiculous when you are suffering from constant high anxiety and possibly even panic attacks, but stopping panic is actually only a small step away.

The brain responds to commands via our senses; so when something is too hot, our brain reacts by forcing us to withdraw the threatened part of us from the heat. If we need to learn to ride a bicycle, our senses come together to enable us, through practice, to stay upright on a bike. The skill is then adopted by the subconscious mind.

That pattern of 'behaviour' is burnt into our subconscious mind as a series of neural pathways in the brain. We learn everything in this way... practice makes perfect! Similarly, anxiety responses (in fact, any response) can be trained not to happen or to be minimised as we replace them with more appropriate reactions.

When a firewalker first walks on hot coals, do you think it is comfortable? No, of course not. The part of the subconscious mind responsible for 'self preservation' responds to heat on the feet with muscular retractions which attempt to move the feet away; simultaneously, the nerves of the feet feed back pain signals to the brain as a signal that danger is present.

Firewalkers learn to switch off that response, or at least minimise it in order to make the pain bearable.

So, when someone says to you, "don't panic" or "stop panicking", regardless of whether they have a full understanding of your condition or not, they are actually saying something which is achievable... annoying, but achievable!

But, how do you switch off the anxiety response?

Through a structured programme of learning, it is very possible to tune the anxiety response back down to a natural, appropriate level, deep within the subconscious mind where the anxiety response is stored and where your inappropriate reaction to high anxiety is perpetuated and controlled.

In fact, this can be done very quickly indeed as long as you follow a structured programme which carefully 'unpicks' the behavioural changes you have made in your subconscious which cause your inappropriate anxiety, whilst supporting you with advice and reassurance if and/or when you need it.
