What are Panic Attacks?
Panic attacks happen when anxiety reaches a level at which the adrenalin, the hormone secreted by the adrenal glands to prepare the body when we face potential threat, is not used up by fighting or fleeing from that threat. Panic attacks are the body's way of 'letting off steam' and using up all the excess adrenalin.
Panic attacks are sometimes alarming to sufferers because the physical sensations and the thoughts experienced emulate real threat and physical symptoms that are usually associated with illness, despite the fact that both the anxiety response and panic attacks are harmless; panic attacks developed in humans as part of the 'self preservation' process, so why would they be threatening? They are not, they just FEEL dreadful..
Panic attack sufferers often believe they are ill, especially when they experience symptoms which make them feel short of breath or experience pain in the chest, for example, but the symptoms of panic attacks are harmless.

Panic attacks symptoms
Every person experiences panic attacks slightly differently, but the core condition, that causes panic attacks is the same in every person.
Panic attacks symptoms are caused by the physical adjustments made to various bodily systems during the anxiety response to prepare the body for 'flight or fight'.
The flight or fight response is a self-preservation response that developed in humans in order to produce those bodily responses that can make us lighter, faster, stronger and more prepared when a REAL threat is present.
Of course, in panic attacks, the anxiety is inappropriate.
During the anxiety response, digestion, circulation and respiration are adjusted to prepare the body to either flee from, or fight, a potential threat which gives rise to all the panic attacks symptoms you experience.
The formation of panic attacks: Your lungs have to work harder to move oxygen to the muscles in preparation for action; Circulation and therefore the heart rate, increases in order to distribute oxygen and fluids around the body; digestion slows in order to divert fluids from the digestive tract to the blood; the digestive tract and bladder attempt to evacuate faeces and urine in order to make the body lighter, enabling you to run faster if required; hormone, oxygen, carbon dioxide and the levels of other substances are a altered and the body becomes coiled, like a spring, ready for action... the panic attack is building.
This would all be appropriate and effective, IF a REAL threat was present.
In high anxiety conditions, like panic attacks, OCD, agoraphobia, PTSD and generalised anxiety, NO REAL THREAT is present...
...there is nothing to run from or fight.
The adrenalin that fuels the reaction circulates in your blood stream preparing
you for action, but when the action doesn't happen, all of these symptoms conspire
to produce high anxiety - at this point, the body has to dispose of the excess adrenaline and it does this by causing panic attacks.
