Agoraphobia

What is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia can be described as an inappropriate fear of situations which expose the sufferer to large crowds, public scrutiny, open spaces, embarrassment or travelling away from a person or place of trust.

The dictionary definition of agoraphobia is 'fear of public places' but this definition is too narrow... the affects of agoraphobia on the sufferer can be far reaching.

Agoraphobia is a symptom of an underlying anxiety condition and not a stand-alone disorder or phobia. Without an underlying level of inappropriate anxiety, agoraphobia cannot exist. Agoraphobia is fuelled by anxiety as sufferers limit their geographic movements to prevent an anxious reaction.

Agoraphobia is NOT a mental illness, nor is it a symptom of mental illness; agoraphobia is a behavioural modification to prevent high anxiety, nothing more.

Agoraphobia is a 'natural reaction'; a form of self preservation. When threatened, our subconscious mind causes us to retreat to a place of safety, agoraphobia is an embellished form of this behaviour. Agoraphobia causes the sufferer to experience the affect of anxiety even when no actual threat exists, this happens when the perceived threat is given credibility by inappropriate levels of anxiety.

The agoraphobic cycle works like this:

Anxiety causes fear - fear causes retreat - retreat gives credibility to fear - fear causes anxiety... and so on.

Agoraphobia causes sufferers to limit their activities and is often responsible for the breakdown of normal routines which have a knock on affect through every aspect of their life. Agoraphobia has been responsible for job losses, breakdowns in relationships and other potentially life-changing issues.

What treatments are available for agoraphobia sufferers?

What must be understood before any treatment is commenced, is that agoraphobia is not an illness, neither mental or physical. Agoraphobia is caused by inappropriate levels of anxiety and can be eliminated quickly and simply by undoing the changes in the subconscious mind that caused the condition to develop.

Any effective agoraphobia solution MUST address the changes that have been made in the Amygdala by the inappropriate anxiety turning off the inappropriate anxiety response.
