Stress and Anxiety

Stress
Mental or physical tension that results from physical, emotional, or chemical causes.

Stress is the physical manifestation of work or life pressure; it is a condition which affects the sufferer not only, on a psychological level, but can also present a wide range of physiological symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks and phobias.

Many people say that they suffer from stress but what most people experience are the normal pressures that can be expected in life. Stress is usually progressive and the start of the condition is usually punctuated by anxiety symptoms.

Causes of Stress

Stress is based on your own perceived position in any situation. If you are negative by nature, things will always seem worse. Anxiety caused by stress is the result of you either not understanding the situation at hand or by you taking on the responsibility for that situation. That kind of burden is enough to make anyone buckle at the knees and anxiety is the logical next step taken by your mind and body in order to address the problem.

If you could modify your perception of the stressor and tackle it as a challenge rather than an obstacle, you would be able to limit the physical affect of that stressor massively. By being positive and proactive, you can undermine the stressor but, more importantly, you can halt the creation of an anxiety disorder.

If you have reached a point where you are suffering from anxiety, insomnia, digestive upset or constant worry, you will then need to address the anxiety disorder directly in a structured and supportive programme of anxiety elimination.

Types of Stress

There are many triggers or catalysts for the initial stress experienced and these must be addressed in order to prevent them from affecting pressure levels on an ongoing basis. Stress can also be the result of an event such as bereavement, divorce or money worries.

Some stress is much simpler to address than others; if the stressor has an emotional element, such as divorce or bereavement, the process of recovery can take a little longer, however, when the stress is caused by something which should have very little emotional impact, it is easier to distance yourself from any ill affects it may produce. Stress induced anxiety under these circumstances is more common.

Most work stressors are simple to overcome because they must be tackled in a structured way based on work practice and common sense; they are not complicated by emotion; but, if you start to make work circumstances personal, taking on board those responsibilities as part of your emotional baggage, you then run the risk of amplifying the situation.

Symptoms of Stress

The primary reaction to stress (not pressure) is heightened anxiety. Anxiety causes the body to become coiled like a spring ready to flee or fight any appropriate threats. Because stress causes the body to produce an anxiety reaction, a sufferer first starts to notice the affects of anxiety on their life. Insomnia, dizziness, digestive problems, sweaty palms, shortness of breath; all of these anxiety symptoms are linked directly to stress.

Stress and anxiety cause superficial psychological symptoms also. It is not unusual for stress sufferers to experience sadness, aggression, high anxiety, depersonalization or derealisation during their disorder.

Anxiety causes panic attacks and phobias, which are often experienced by sufferers when they reach a level of stress where the body and mind begin to feel threatened... it is then that the flight or fight anxiety reaction happens.

Medics tend to label these conditions as 'stress' for ease but, at The Linden Centres, we find that sufferers may have been stressed by life or work circumstances initially but, by not addressing the stress, they have allowed their physical self to react inappropriately, inadvertently causing an anxiety disorder.

If the correct diagnosis is made at the onset, there is so much a sufferer can do to quickly and permanently undo the changes and return to normal and appropriate reactions to anxiety and stress. Our anxiety and stress elimination methodology does just that.

Stress and Anxiety Treatment / Cures

Stress and Anxiety Medication / Drugs

There are no direct medical cures for stress and anxiety. Because stress is caused by the reaction to perceived stressors, any treatment must address the sufferer's perception and not the resultant symptoms.

Some medics will claim that drug therapy works in stress conditions, but it doesn't. At best, a drug will simply sedate the sufferer for a relatively short period of time.

Stress and anxiety can only be successfully treated using a combination approach which addresses the root cause of the problem whilst informing and supporting the sufferer through every step of the recovery process.

Psychotherapy for Stress and Anxiety

Work-related stress is better tackled by life coaching techniques than psychotherapeutic techniques and anxiety elimination is best done through a combination method in order to address the catalyst for the initial stress and the resultant anxiety in a structured and supportive programme of elimination.

Alternative Therapies for Stress

I am a great advocate of 'do what works for you' and if alternative practices offer you relief, do them. Alternative practices are often quite supportive; massage in particular offers amazing relief to the tired muscles and aches and pains caused by stress and anxiety.

Do not be fooled however, in over a decade of helping stress and anxiety sufferers, we have never seen any evidence to suggest that any alternative therapies can be a true cure for anxiety and stress related conditions.
