Dementia and anxiety advice for sufferers and carers
Around 70% of people with dementia also suffer from anxiety.
Since 1996 we have helped thousands of people with a wide range of mental and physical illnesses to overcome their anxiety, obsessions, phobias, low mood and compulsions.
Anxiety is a common companion to other illness and it is assumed by many, that anxiety is inevitable when a person is confronted with other serious health issues, but that is not the case. Despite often being referred to as an 'emotion', Anxiety is not one.
Anxiety is a disorder of the emotion of fear. When fear becomes disordered, anxiety conditions are activated.
Even those with other, often unassociated, mental and physical illnesses shouldn't suffer from anxiety; whilst fear responses are appropriate in such situations, anxiety is not and is an unnecessary and exacerbating
Anxiety, the disorder, is only experienced by the, approximately, 30% of humans born with the genetic predisposition to suffering; the ‘ability’ to suffer.
In dementia, a greater proportion of people suffer than in the general population; this may be due to the neurological effect of dementia on brain structures, but could equally be related to a relationship between the genetic predisposition to anxiety suffering and dementia.
The predisposition to suffering from anxiety related conditions is pre-set by evolution – it is the cause of all disorders of the emotions including anxiety, obsessions, phobias, compulsions and anxiety related low mood. It is the ‘cause’.
This predisposition may be directly related to the development of dementia and associated conditions.
Despite the predisposition and activation of an anxiety condition within dementia, it is possible to regain the emotional balance needed to more effectively manage dementia and maintain a more stable and enjoyable lifestyle despite it. This is true of all illnesses, diseases and disorders.
Implementation of a programme of emotional balance will also provide a group of more practical, life-enhancing and condition-slowing benefits as described on the next pages.
The problem is that the science used in widely used anxiety treatment methods is wrong.
Anxiety is almost treated as a form of ‘spiritual collapse’ or ‘breakdown’, which it is not.
This has given rise to a massively inappropriate treatment pathway that rarely leads to relief and often leads to perpetuation and worsening of the core issues.
Our psycho-educational recovery programme uses the science of the emotions to adjust inappropriate emotional responses back down to ‘normal’.
What is normal?
The normal emotional response in any individual is that dictated by the connectome and genome (neurology and genes) not by environmental factors or perceived trauma.
HOW WILL OUR PROGRAMME BENEFIT PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA AND THEIR FAMILIES?
These are just a few of the advantages of the programme.
